The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) is a nationwide scholarship program offered by the central government of India to financially support bright students from economically weaker sections. The main goal is to prevent these students from dropping out of school after Class 8 and to encourage them to continue their education through secondary school (Classes 9 to 12).

For the NMMS 2025 selection process, students typically need to appear for a state-level examination conducted by their respective State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). This exam usually consists of two parts:

• Mental Ability Test (MAT): This section assesses a student's reasoning and critical thinking skills through questions on topics like analogy, classification, series, and pattern perception.
• Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT): This part evaluates a student's knowledge of subjects like science, social studies, and mathematics, generally based on the Class 7 and 8 syllabi.

To qualify for the NMMS scholarship under the general category, students usually need to score a minimum of 40% in both the MAT and SAT exams. Additionally, at the time of final selection, they must have secured at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in their Class 8 examination. There is a relaxation of 5% in marks for students belonging to reserved categories (SC/ST). It's important to note that these are general guidelines, and the specific qualifying marks and procedures might vary slightly from state to state.

The students who clear both the exams and meet the other eligibility criteria, such as having a family income of not more than Rs.3,50,000 per annum, are included in the merit list. This merit list is usually prepared state-wise and sometimes even district-wise, depending on the state's policy. The selected students then receive a scholarship of Rs.12,000 per year (Rs.1,000 per month) to support their education from Class 9 to Class 12, provided they continue their studies in government, government-aided, or local body schools and maintain a satisfactory academic performance (usually requiring to secure a minimum percentage in Class 9 and Class 11 to continue the scholarship in the next class).
