Describe swallowing mechanism in snakes.

Snakes are capable of swallowing very large animals through their mouth gape which can be widened enormously. Thus the lowering of lower jaws and forward movement of reduced upper jaws bring about great expansion of mouth gape enabling snake go swallow large animals.
Mechanism of swallowing- The reflex is initiated by touch receptors in the pharynx as a bolus of food is pushed to the mouth by the tongue or by stimulation of the palate ( palatal reflex) . Swallowing is a complex mechanism using both skeletal muscle (tongue) and smooth muscles of the pharynx and esophagus.

well snakes are capable of swallowing large animals like rabbits and phython can even swallow up a deer .well their mouth gap can be widened enormously.the lowering of the lower jaws forward movement of upper jaws can help widened their mouths enormously and swallow large animals .
