Do all of the 2 lakh candidates join iits and if they don't what happens to the empty seats
Hi Shipra,
No 2 lakh candidates can not be admitted at IITs, as al 23 IITs only have 10,988 B.Tech seats. So, only these many students will be offered seats. Moreover, all top 2 lakh qualifying candidates of JEE Main who sit for JEE Advanced do not qualify for IIT admission. Only 50,000 or 55,000 candidates qualify out of the total who appear in the test. Also, would like to tell you that the admission at IITs does not happen sequentially. There are various factors involved in the admission process, one of which is your choice filling of the courses or institute. Many students who do not get the IIT or B.Tech branch of their choice, either withdraw and get admission in NITs, IIITs or CFTIs or they move to some good Private Engineering colleges who offer them good/popular branches based on their scores in JEE Advanced/JEE Main.
Nothing happens to the vacant seats. The vacant seats remain vacant. The IITs have not been able create a mechanism to ensure that all 10,988 seats are filled and candidates are admitted on all. Last year also around 116 seats remained vacant at IITs, while in 2016, over 50 seats were left vacant.
