Dear Student,
a drop of mercury also known as DME, is used in the process of polarography as a working electrode made out of mercury. These mercury based electrodes are used in electrochemical studies using the three electrode system while investigating reaction mechanisms that are related to redox chemistry among other chemical phenomena.
