Hello aspirant,
Since your rank is low possiblity of getting a good nit or iiit decreases. You can get admission in some north eastern nits like nit meghalaya,nit Sikkim, nit tripura, nit arunachal Pradesh if you wait till last rounds of counselling.

• Or else you can opt for colleges like lnmit jaipur,nirma college of engineering
  
• If you belong to Delhi region then apply for JAC counselling.

Wait and apply in the last round of jossa which is spot round and you can have a NIT with good branch.

40k rank is quite descent as per jee .I am assuming you a general candidate (for reserved category it will be much easier) As per previous year cutoff and trends you will definitely get assured seat in most of the colleges of NITs and IIITs . Though it will tough for getting seat in top ones still you have hope and you have to wait till last round for getting top colleges .

2. DTU,delhi
3. NSIT,Delhi
4. IIT,Delhi

Now your chances for getting admission in NITs decreases but you should give all rounds  through state counselling so chances may rise to get you a decent NIT.
