explain how a reflex action takes place

A reflex action is a quick and automatic response to a stimulus that helps protect our body from danger.

How a reflex action takes place:

1. A stimulus is detected by a receptor. For example, you touch a hot object.
2. The sensory neuron carries the nerve impulse to the spinal cord.
3. In the spinal cord, a relay neuron (interneuron) passes the impulse to a motor neuron.
4. The motor neuron carries the impulse to an effector, such as a muscle.
5. The muscle immediately contracts, and you quickly withdraw your hand.

Reflex arc:

Stimulus → Receptor → Sensory neuron → Spinal cord/Relay neuron → Motor neuron → Effector → Response

This process happens very quickly because the spinal cord coordinates the immediate response before the brain fully processes the information.
