Question : Find the maximum value of F in the following equation:
5E9 + 2F8 + 3G7 = 1114, where E, F and G each stands for any digit.
Option 1: 8
Option 2: 9
Option 3: 7
Option 4: 5
Correct Answer: 9
Solution :
Given:
5E9 + 2F8 + 3G7 = 1114
The sum of the last digits i.e. (9 + 8 + 7) = 24, 4 is at the unit place and 2 is carried over.
The sum of the first digits i.e. (5 + 2 + 3) = 10 and 1 is added from the previous carry.
The 2 carried over is added to the sum of the middle digits of the numbers (E + F + G).
⇒ E + F + G + 2 will be 11.
⇒ E + F + G = 9
For the maximum value of F, values of E and G should be the minimum possible.
If E = G = 0, then F = 9.
So, the maximum value of F = 9
Hence, the correct answer is 9.
