There are some designing courses in India also. Colleges like DYP-DC,MIT,etc. Talking about govt institites there are NIDs and IITs. You can do your graduation in product or industial designing and do specialisation in automobile. It would be better if you do engineering in mech. or automobile because it would be more secure for your future. Because I'm doing B.des from a private university in industrial and product designing and it's not so good for my career but I don't really know why i chose thi. Better you don't do the same mistake..
If possible appear for UCEED,NID,DAT exams
Engineering degree is must as it involves engineering drawaing, manufacturing, product development, automation which all is mandatory to become designer.
