I believe you need to read the news papers daily... Also make a habit of listening to AIR news bulletin and Doordarshan news for update on national issues. with online media playing a major role you can also subscribe to Reuters and Wall Street Journal.

For, GK & current affair for a particular year, I prefer Manorama Year Book.
