Astronomy or Astrophysics Courses:
There is a severe shortage of serious astronomers in the country. However there are also a limited number of institutions which actually do research in astronomy. All I would like to say is that you should try to get your degree under a well recognized astronomer so that you will have a reasonable chance of success. You have to get a B.Sc or B.Eng. in Physics or Engineering subjects and apply for masters degree program in one of the Indian Institutions. Please keep it in your mind that there is no college in India which offers a undergraduate programme in astronomy. At the master's and Ph.D there are several options.
- If you want to do Instrumentation/ Experimental you may go in for the Engineering Option.
- On the other hand if you want to do theoretical astronomy or observations, you may go through science stream.
- If you want to end up with B.E ., there are many jobs available for technicians at various places in the country, including ISRO
- In india, there are several astronomical institutions including IIA where astronomers are employed. We can find the other oppurtunities in the big government institutions such as ISRO and DRDO.
Coming to the enterance exam to enroll the colleges we need to qualify the enterance examination conducted by the college with the completion of our graduation.
