Hello,
There are two ways to look at things if you're contemplating to appear for UPSC, one is with back up plan, and another is without it, now you should consider the first if you're not sure of appearing only for upsc, say you have aspiration to pursue a career in engineering, medical, research and UPSC is one of the option after these, many candidates from these backgrounds have qualified UPSC, now the latter option is pursuing graduation in Political Science, History, Geography, Public Administration, Economics etc, as there is considerable amount of overlap with GS and Optional paper, what happens in above mentioned scenarios is your scope is limited in the sense you may appear for other government exams, or have a career in teaching, or pursue higher studies etc comparatively to that of any other professional degree, so make your choices accordingly, it's not that candidates with humanities background qualify UPSC, yes they have advantage of studying the core subjects all through school and college, but as I told you there are also toppers from other backgrounds.
