That depends upon the NIT you are applying in, various NIT have seats reserved for their home state candidate as well.
For example
Suppose you are from Chattisgarh and you are applying for NIT Raipur.
Now if you were from other state and had a sc rank around 7500 , you'll get admission in Biotechnology.
But if you are from Chattisgarh
Then with the same Rank you can get a branch like Chemical and mechanical in NIT Raipur, since some seats are reserved for home state students
