helo maam I have psychology in boards. one question what is false consensus effect and you please explain why does it happen
Hi! False Consensus effect is a type of cognitive bias whereby people tend to overestimate the extent to which their own opinions, beliefs, preferences, values, and habits are normal and typical of those of others. In simpler words, it is a bias in which people have that others also think the same way that they do. This cognitive bias tends to lead to the perception of a consensus that does not exist, leading to the ‘False Conscious’.
One of the possible causes of the false consensus is a factor known as Available Heuristic, i.e., when we are trying to estimate how common or likely something is we tend to look at the examples that come to mind most readily. The false consensus effect tends to be stronger in certain situations. If we consider something really important or feel confident in our point of view, the degree of false consensus tends to be stronger; that is, we’re most likely to assume more people agree with us. The effect is also stronger in instances where we are very sure that our beliefs, opinions, or ideas are the correct ones.
I hope this answered your query!
