Hey! I am a media and sociology student. I love to write but also I love sociology. I am confused as to which stream I should get in?
Hello Komal,
Your question is not very clear as to what stream of study you are pursuing. Is it media studies or Sociology, or, media studies with Sociology as a specialisation? Let us be clear about one thing. A career is one in which we spend most of our productive years. So, be clear in your mind about the field that you are really interested in. If it is media studies that you are interested in, ideally you should go for a BA in Sociology and then go for a PG Diploma or MA in Journalism. The reason is that a BA degree gives you a sound footing in the subject area of your choice, be it, literature, history, politics or arts. Media studies give you professional knowledge about various functions like, writing, reporting, editing etc., on any topic under the sun. Only if you have a sound knowledge of any a subject will you have a broad vision about the society, interplay of various factors and develop into a good journalist.
If you look at some of the big names in journalism, you will find that 99 percent of them did not study journalism at undergraduate level. It is not exactly your journalistic qualification that will give you recognition. It's your sound knowldege of the subject that you are writing on that gives you recognition. So, my advice is, do a BA, and possibly a Master's in Sociology and then go for a one-year PG Diploma in Journalism from an institute that is well-recognised in the industry to hone your writing or reporting skills.
Hope this clears your doubt. In case you have any more doubts on the same, feel free to reach out to us again. All the best!
You can take up sociology as a course for future. Side by side you can write for media companies. They look for freelance writers every time. So by this you can have both and whenever you are free from one you can focus more on the other one. Also diploma courses work for media subjects.
