hi. want to know the career pathway to become a captain of a ship. what are the qualifications required and which exams need to be given
Dear Aspirant,
The Merchant Navy is the base for all international trade ,employing a huge number of workers to carry and deliver goods from one country to another being a major contributor to the import and export business of the country.
A career in the merchant navy ,especially that or a ship captain is considered to be a job of pride and honour. A ship captain must have excellent direction, navigation, evaluation and tracking skills. The whole crew depends on your orders. Before you are promoted to the post of a ship captain, you would be working as a deck officer and will get on job training to enhance your experience.
For the first step, you will be required to appear for entrance exams like IMU CET conducted by Indian Maritime University, CUSAT CAT etc. for Merchant Navy.
The reputed institutes for Merchant Navy are:
1.)Maritime Academy, Chennai
2.)Indian Institute of Port Management, Kolkata
3.)Marine Engineering and Research Institute, MERI Kolkata
4.)Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research, Mumbai
5) Marine Engineering and Research Institute, MERI Mumbai
Hope this helps! All the best.
