To study any language- we need to start from the basics. And so you should begin with the Sanskrit alphabets first- like how to write and pronounce them. For writing- it almost resembles Hindi language and so it won't be that much difficult. Prepare a separate notebook for it and note down the basics first. Refer Sanskrit Vyakaran (grammar) book.
Practice maximum- score maximum.

- Write the alphabets and read- learn the pronounciation.
- It'll be more easy if you refer the Sanskrit dictionary and doing this way.. you can learn the words along with their meanings fast.
- Go for the examples given in the Vyakaran book and practice them in both writing and reading.
- Start with one line sentences writing their translations in English >> as it'll be easy for you to revise later.
- Keep a regular practice-revision.
- Write around 10 pages daily if you want to learn fast and score good.
- You have to understand the grammar rules and learn the tables for the applications of the word-forms in the sentence. And so you require to practice and write it the maximum times.
- The more you'll practice - the more fast you'll learn.
