Scores work to predict rank and percentile. all the scores are considered to make ALL India Rank and other list is created for Categorical. In both the places, score is taken into consideration and it is checked how overall and average students perform and how students performed in the categorical reservation sections. They after they decide the cutoff after lot many analysis.
Rank is based on score and Percentile. Percentile indicates how well you performed out of the total candidates who has appeared the JEE Main Jan session. If your percentile is 80 then it indicates that you have performed well than 79% of total jee main candidates but more 81-100% students has performed better than you.
All this depends on lots of factors and there are boards of officials for analysis of all these.
