HOW IS SEAT allocation in NIT's
Hello Vidya,
NITs are the one among the premier institutes of our country and are very reputable. There are 31 NITs in our country.
In order to get admission in NITs one needs to write JEE Main. After clearing this there is a counselling process whereby eligible candidates are admitted in various NITs. There also a eligibility criteria required that is - one needs to get 75% or more in class 12 board examination or he/she should be in top 20 percentile. Although for this year this has been scraped due to Covid19 pendemic.
Seat allocation is done basically through counselling. Joint Seat Allocation Authority ( JoSAA) is the counselling conducting body which conducts seven rounds of Counselling. Candidates have to fill their choices of college. Based on their rank they are allocated college and get admission. There is also a mock seat allocation round where candidates can check whether they are getting college based on their Choices or not. The candidates are then first allotted seats based on their CRL rank, if they get their highest preferred choice then allocation is done otherwise their category rank is seen, if they have. When they don't get seat of their highest preference then the preference just below the highest one is taken into consideration and the allocation procedures are same. Once a seat has been allotted to a particular candidate he/she has the following options:
- Freeze- For those candidates who has accepted the seat and do not want to participate in subsequent round of Counselling.
- Slide: For those candidates who has accepted the seat and if higher/better preference is available to them within the same Institute then they will accept it .
- Float: Candidates accept the offered seat and indicate that, if admission to an academic program of better/higher preference in any Institute is offered, they will accept it. Else, they will continue with the currently accepted academic program.
For candidates who opt for float and slide allocation of a seat in an academic program of his/her higher preference would automatically result in the forfeiture of the seat accepted by the candidate in the previous round.
Ultimately you have to pay the seat acceptance fee and download the provisional seat allocation letter. After making payment you have to visit your nearest NIT or other similar college for document verification. After this document verification you have to be connected to that Institute wherein you have to get admission.
Moreover there is two special round conducted by CSAB for filling the leftover seats in the NITs.
