AIIMS counselling process is done in offline mode and takes place in four rounds, namely, first, second, third and open round of counselling. AIIMS counselling happens in following process:
1. Counselling call letters are released on AIIMS official website, to the candidates who qualify the entrance exam and appear in merit lists released by AIIMS.
2. Typically the total number of candidates to be called for counselling are equal to four times the total number of seats available in each category.
3. Candidates called in first round of counselling are asked to exercise their choice with respect to the institution (amongst 7 AIIMS institutions).
4. The seats which remain vacant after 1st round of counselling, are allotted in 2nd round of counselling and also candidates who were selected and allotted seats in 1st round of counselling are allowed to change their institution in second and third round of counselling if they wish so.
5. Similarly, the seats which remain vacant after 2nd round of counselling are allotted in 3rd round of counselling.
6. After third round of counselling is over, ‘open round of counselling’ is conducted in which all the candidates who qualified entrance examination are eligible to participate in the order of their merit. Open counselling round is held only when seats remain vacant after third round of counselling. Candidates who would have made a choice uptil third round of counselling will not allowed to change their choice of institution in open counselling round.
· In every round of counselling, AIIMS keep different dates of counselling for different categories. Seats are first filled through open competition (unreserved) for unreserved seats. In this candidates are called for counselling in order of their merit irrespective of the category they belong to. The reference of such candidates is taken from ‘common merit list’.
· After this, reserved category candidates are called to fill respective reserved category seats. Candidates must note that a reserved category candidate who has opted for a seat in open competition will also be eligible to take admission under reserved category seat if it better suits his/her choice of institution. In such a case, the unreserved seat vacated by that reserved candidate, will only be given to the next meritorious candidate belonging to his/her reserved category.
· In case seats available for ST category remains vacant, they will be transferred to SC category and vice-versa. Furthermore, if SC/ST seats remain vacant, they will be transferred to General seats. Similarly, if OBC seats remain vacant, they will also be transferred to General seats.
