At present, there are sixteen IITs in Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati, Roorkee, Hyderabad, Patna, Bhubaneshwar, Ropar, Jodhpur, Gandhinagar, Indore, Mandi and Varanasi. Of these16, 10 were established after 2004.
In all, IIT offers 4944 seats in the General category for all the engineering programmes. About 17,390 seats are allocated to 30 NITs. The highest number of seats has been allocated to NIT, Raipur and this is followed by MANIT, Bhopal with 937 seats and NIT, Rourkela has 900 seats.

The National Institutes of Technology(NITs) are autonomous public institutes of higher education, located in India just like IIT. The basic difference between the two is IITs gives admissions on the basis of JEE Advanced while nits gives admissions on the basis of JEE mains.

Total 10988 seats in Total of 23 IIT.
And 17868 seats in 31 NIT.
IITs have created 800 supernumerary seats this year in 2018
