You haven't mentioned about your category and state of eligibility. Now, let me consider you a general candidate and belong to normal state( not from WB or northern state).
A general rank of not more than 35000, is must to get admission in any branch. If you want core branches then, try to get under 25000. A CSE and ECE fill early and need one to have under 15000.
Converting into percentile 97+ is must.

You can get admission in NITs with 96+ percentile, but if you want branches like CSE, IT, ECE you need to have 98.5+ percentile. Also it might be different for your home state. In northeast states even with 90 percentile students get admission.

Cutoff vary every year for various NIT based on various factors but a general analysis will tell you that the minimum percentile to secure seats in NIT for a general category student would be around 95-96% percentile.
