If you are aspiring to be a scientist then you have to appear for GATE, BARC, ISRO and CISR exam to be eligible for get a call from respective organizations. DRDO, HAL, AIDA shortlist candidates from GATE for Scientist 'B' position. IIT' s, NIT' s and other top institutes also prefer to select candidate through GATE which latter followed by an institute level written and interview round.
You need to score high in GATE and other competitive exams as Cut Off for Scientist position is quite high and organizations prefer best brains among the aspirants.
Some of my friends are now working with Ordinance Factory and NTPC as research scientist and according to them patience and hard work is the key to the success. They used to refer standard books for the respective subjects, making notes and key points for the chapters and formula sheet for reference. Apart from that you need to be very clear and have a practical approach to crack the interview because questions asked in interview are mix of theory and cases.
