How to count merit for NIT and IIT ?

Can you please clear what do you want to ask.

Assuming that you are asking about the preparation of the exam,then for JEE Mains you need to be very well versed with your NCERT.The questions asked in the exam are not of very great level and hence if you have your concepts clear, and solve a lot of questions from NCERT,HC VERMA(for Physics) and Arihant for Maths you shall end up scoring well.
For Advanced,having very high knowledge of the concepts is extremely important.Jee advanced is one of the toughest exams of the country and not only you have to read the things,you need to solve a lot of questions as well.Follow good books (Cengage can help).Also,you can go for MS Chouhan,JD Lee and N.Awasthi for chemistry,Cengage and H.C.Verma for Physics and Arihant for maths (Amit M Agarwal proves to be useful.)
Practice a lot and work really hard as well as smartly.You shall make it.

I am not sure what you mean by count the merit of!

Nevertheless, let me tell you that for admission to the above institutes you need minimum 75% (or 65% if you belong to reserved category) or be ranked in the top 20 percentile in your board.
