JEE Advanced will include concept-based questions that require very sound knowledge of concepts and the ability to use those concepts to solve problems. Also, unlike other exams, JEE Advanced is an elimination exam, so that average students are removed, and only the cream remains. So, to crack this exam, and get a rank as you have mentioned on your post, you need to very engaged in your studies and be smart how you prepare.

Some of the golden rules to do well in the exam are:

• Clear your concepts - start with NCERT books, as they are the best and contain reliable information. Solve all the problems given at the end of each chapter to ensure you understand what you have read and that you learn the tricks to solve problems related to those concepts included in the chapter.
• Once done with NCERT, move on to more advanced books, as NCERT books on their own are not enough.
• Solve sample and previous years' question papers. The more questions you solve, the more confident you will grow. Also, it will help you plug loopholes.
• Do extensive revision. Maintaining notes will ensure you don't have to read extensive blocks of text to brush up a point.
• Also, don't put too much pressure on yourself by targeting a particular rank. If you do that you will become obsessed and anxiety will take over. Relax, smile when you get an opportunuity, enjoy the small things in life, eat and stay healthy, and sleep well
