To go for Indian Foreign Service, candidates must pass 10+2 in any stream with a minimum of 50 percent marks from a recognized board. Then complete a bachelor's degree in any field in order to sit for the UPSC examination. Then, give UPSC exam and clear it to get training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration and Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service to be ready to serve country as IFS officer. Eligibility for the examination is that the candidate should be between 21 and 32 years old and should have completed a bachelor's degree in any field .

For being an IFS officer you have to qualify a 3 tier examination named UPSC CSE. UPSC CSE selects IFS officers based on three steps:
- Prelims: where you are asked objective type questions. This is a qualifying level.
- Mains: Here you will asked descriptive level and on qualifying this you will be called for the next level.
- Personality Test: Here you will be asked questions by the panelist. If you qualify this levels with good marks then you will be able to be an IFS officer.
UPSC CSE aspirants gives IFS to be there 2nd or 3rd choice of priority. So the competition will be quite high for this designation.
Now the eligibility for the UPSC CSE is that the student must have a degree of graduation from a recognized university/college. Candidates age should be 21 to 32 years. There are relaxation for the reserved student as follows:
SC/ST – 5 years
• OBC – 3 years
• Defence Service Personnel – 3 years
• Ex-Servicemen – 5 years
• ECOs/ SSCOs – 5 years
• PwD – 10 years
