How to overcome obsession of novels?
Answer (1)
Dear Afreen, what actually starts as a time pass goes beyond our control and becomes an obsession. I am a Psychologist and may be can give out few tips how to control over reading. While reading is not a bad habit, setting important things aside to concentrate on Novels might be a tad wrong. I just joined college when someone introduced me to couple of Mills and Boons novels. I too was lost in the portrayal of loveandlust. Then I started reading books by Sydney Sheldon. It showed me the power of vengeance. I lost my track. But once I came across a book by Rabindranath Tagore 'Gora'. It actulually opened my eyes to reality. It was nothing like the books I read before. I understood the difference between drama and reality. I understood what is important in succeeding in life is not dreaming about a prince charming but creating a world for myself where someone who would treat me with respect comes to me on his own realising my virtue. And it worked for me. That was the last time I ever was addicted to something which was different from real world. Different people have different approaches to situations. You can try this one. So there is a test called The Marshmellow Test designed by Walter Mischel. This is usually used in children but can be used for adults as well. This test actually develops your self control and teaches you how to master it. So for starters, try setting a date for yourself like may be if you can go a week or 10 days without reading a novel, then you can reward yourself with something that you like. Like may be a top that you have wanted to buy for so long or a trip you have been interested in. Start with smaller time frames and every time you succeed it, set a bigger target for yourself. It might be difficult initially but you will fall in the groove eventually.
