Hello Anshika, there is absolutely no restriction. You can. You just are not allowed to take up Statistics and Mathematics together.
The people you know might have been saying you can't because they thought you won't know mathematics at the academic level like say a Math Hons. student will. In that case, it might be a disadvantage because questions outside your scope of knowledge maybe asked.
Make sure to know the syllabus well, and if you are confident, you should definitely go forward with Math.
