I am an M.A. in English subjects. Now I want to pursue M.A. in Mathematics subject. Is there any possibility of getting admission through Distance Learning programme in any university in India?
Hello Dear Student,
Yes, it is possible to pursue a Master's degree in Mathematics through distance/open learning in India, but there is an important consideration.
Most universities offering M.Sc. Mathematics through distance mode require that you have studied Mathematics as a major subject in your bachelor's degree. For example, IGNOU's M.Sc. in Mathematics with Applications in Computer Science generally requires a bachelor's degree with Mathematics as a major, honours subject, or one of the main subjects.
Since you already hold an M.A. in English , your eligibility will depend primarily on your bachelor's degree background :
- If your bachelor's degree included Mathematics as a major or one of the main subjects, you may be eligible for several distance M.Sc. Mathematics programs.
- If your bachelor's degree did not include Mathematics, admission to most M.Sc. Mathematics programs may be difficult because universities usually require a strong mathematics foundation.
Some universities and open-learning institutions that offer Mathematics programs through distance mode include:
- Indira Gandhi National Open University (M.Sc. Mathematics with Applications in Computer Science)
- University of Madras Institute of Distance Education
- Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University
- Netaji Subhas Open University
- Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University
Hope it helps!
