First of all do apply in that NIT which belongs to your Home State. The probability is high that you will get a seat there.
If your Home State NIT is among the top NITs then it would be tough to get a seat. If this is the case then go for lower to mid NITs.
For example,
NIT Patna, NIT Silchar, NIT Agartala, IIEST Shibpur, NIT Raipur, NIT Pondicherry, NIT Andhra Pradesh.
