I got an RT in one subject and passed overall. Can I appear for improvement exams in four subjects next year, including the one I got an RT in? Please, can someone explain this in detail? It would really mean a lot to me
Not surprisingly, you would like to raise the scores, especially if you received an “RT” (Repeat Theory) in one subject, even though you passed the examination overall.
You pass in all other course but you does not have minimum pass marks in theory in that subject. The good news is, if you have passed overall, then either your one extra was compensated with other marks, or your board has the rule for compensating other marks even after having RT in one subject even.
Can I give for improvement exams in RT as one of my 4 subjects?
This is where you want to pay attention to your individual board's instructions, but in general.
If you have an RT, then you should first focus on clearing it. You can also apply for the supplementary/compartment examination of that particular subject for most of the boards. And most of the times, you just need to appear for the theory paper, because the practical/internal marks are anyway carried forward. It MUST be cleared to achieve a full pass certificate.
However, generally, the improvement exam is for the students who have passed their board exams and want to still improve his/her “marks/grades” taking the exam for one or more subjects. If you "passed over all," you probably could be granted it.
All boards (CBSE based on recent updates for 2024-2025) have option for improvement in one or more subjects, maximum upto 5 main subjects. That implies you should be allowed to appear for four subjects: RT after having passed it, or during your re-appearance.
According to the New Education Policy (NEP) 2021, board exams such as CBSE have come-up with a plan for improvement subject or for improvement of overall performance (exams to be conducted either in same academic year through to be conducted in the next year).
One of the biggest advantages of the improvement exams is that the highest of the two marks (out of original as well as improvement) will be taken into consideration in that particular subject. You will get a new/improved marksheet i.e. showing of the increased performance.
Action Steps
Check the Official Website of your Board Get your information from the official website of your education board (CBSE, ICSE or your state board) for the most reliable advice. Try to find their “Improvement Examination” or “Supplementary Examination” instructions dated the 2024-2025 session.
The best source for information about application process, deadline, and subject(s) one is eligible to apply for improvement can only be provided by your school administration, particularly the examination department.
In short, yes, you can usually give improvement exams in multiple subjects, including the very subject you had an RT if you meet your board's criteria, and timeline.
