I have got 480 marks in GATE2019 civil engineering, compared to last years result why rank is very high for this score?

As you know GATE results were announced on 15th march , one day earlier than the announced date. Congratulations on getting 480 marks, in GATE2019 CE. As for the reason why the rank is very high for the said score, the score depends on various parameters. GATE is conducted by IIT Madras and More than 50,000 students appear for GATE every year for different papers out of the 24 papers.

GATE qualifiers can apply for various NITs and IITs or other institute based on their gate scores, as well as based on their GATE score you do get jobs as well.
The Ranks and cutoffs are usually based on many parameters,

• Number of students appearing in the Exam
• The difficulty level of the Exam
• Category of candidates
• Performance of candidates in the Entrance Exam,
• as well as the Previous year cut off trends.

It is also subject specific cut off scores

Based on all these parameters , they decide the cut off scores and All India Rank  for Qualified students. Your rank may be high for this score compared to last year due to either of the parameters mentioned above. In order to apply for any IITs you have to apply through Common offer acceptance portal (COAP) and for NITs , IIITs Or CFTIs , you cna apply through Centralized counsel for M.Tech (CCMT)
