Dear Kshitij,
You should first see the subjects that you can opt if you are aspiring to appear for the civil services entrance exam. Go through the syllabus and past years question papers. It is imperative for one to be through with the NCERT books from Class eight to XII. Be very very thorough with them. It is very important that you enhance your General Knowledge and remain abreast with current affairs. Listen to Doordarshan news or the news on All India Radio.
There is a book called " India" which is taken out by the government sometime in February. Buy that book and study well from there. It should be on your finger tips Also study from " Yojana" These magazines will give you policy-related information.
Your aim should be to finish the complete syllabus of prelims at least a year before you take the exam, since I am presuming that you are starting your preparation in your first-year fo graduation.
By October you should finish your mains syllabus and then start taking the mock exams. Remember the UPSC exam is all about studying from the right books and being thorough with what you have studied. No need to do research work. Pick up two to three good books for each subject, substantiate it with some good notes from a coaching and a good magazine. Make your own notes.
This will help you to memorize most of the stuff while you are preparing and in the fag end of the preparation, you will be able to quickly revise.
Simultaneously prepare for the interview. Make sure you remain updated with the latest event that are happening.
Wish you loads of good luck and may you come out in flying colours.
