It is quite common to have minor spelling or "matra" errors in board marksheets, but you are right to address them now. Discrepancies in the father's name can cause issues during document verification (DV) for government jobs or passport applications later on.
1. Immediate Solution: The Correction Affidavit
Before your official documents are corrected, you should get a Legal Affidavit prepared by a Notary at your local district court.
-
The affidavit should state that "[Father's Name with extra matra]" and "[Correct Father's Name]" refer to the same person.
-
Specify that the name in the Class 10 marksheet/Aadhaar is the correct one and the Class 12 marksheet contains a clerical error.
Utility: This will act as a temporary "bridge" document during college admissions, so your process isn't stalled.
2. Formal Correction in CBSE/State Board
You need to apply for a "Correction in Name" through your respective education board.
-
The School Route: Contact the Principal of the school from where you completed Class 12. You will need to fill out a correction form provided by the school.
-
Required Documents:
-
Original Class 12 marksheet.
-
Copy of Class 10 marksheet (where the name is correct).
-
School Admission Form (SR Register) copy, where the name was correctly entered.
-
A copy of the newspaper advertisement (some boards, like CBSE, require you to publish a small notice in two newspapers about the name change/correction).
-
-
Submission: The school will forward these documents to the Regional Office (RO) of your board.
3. College Admission & Jobs
-
College Admission: Most colleges will accept you if you show them the receipt of your corrected application or the legal affidavit. They usually give a grace period of a few months to submit the corrected marksheet.
-
Private Jobs: Usually, they are lenient if you explain the clerical error and show your Class 10 marksheet as proof.
-
Government Jobs: They are the strictest. During Document Verification, they match every character. You must have the corrected marksheet before you reach the final stage of a government job selection.
4. Check Other ID Proofs
Ensure your father's name is consistent across your Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, and Class 10 Marksheet. If the error is only in the Class 12 marksheet, then only the board correction is needed. If the error is also in the Aadhaar card, you can get that updated easily at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra using your Class 10 marksheet as a base document.
