The Civil Services Examination consists of two stages:
- Preliminary examination
- Mains Examination comprising of written exam and interview.
Preliminary Examination:
Prelims exam is conducted to screen candidates for the mains. The exam comprises two compulsory papers of 200 marks each. The marks obtained in preliminary exam will not be counted for determining the order of merit. The number of candidates to be admitted to the Main Examination will be about 12 to 13 times the total number of vacancies. The General Studies Paper-II will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks of 33%.
Mains Examination: The written part of Civil Services mains examination comprises two qualifying papers and seven papers that are counted for merit. The written exam of IAS mains are held for 1750 marks. Candidates qualifying the written examination are called for the personality test/interview. The personality test is held for 275 marks. The final merit list is prepared based on the marks obtained by candidates in the written exam and interview.

The IAS selection procedure 2017 has been defined by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The IAS selection procedure is a six stage procedure which includes applying for the exam, appearing in preliminary exam followed by mains and interview document verification and service allocation.
Candidates will be selected for Indian Administrative Services (IAS) based on the performance in mains exam and interview subjected to their meeting basic qualifying standards fixed in Preliminary examination. The final selection for Indian Administrative Services (IAS) will be done as per their rank in allotment list.

Selection Criteria: IAS selection is done entirely based upsc exam. There are three rounds in the exam. Prelims, Mains and Interview.
Procedure: You need to apply for the prelims examination as soon as the notification is out. Usually notification will be out in feb or march. The prelims exam would be in june. You can check the syllabus for the exam in the website. You need a lot of preparation and planning to crack the exam. There are many online resources and coaching institutes which could help you in preparation.
