No, it is not mandatory that you have to appear for both JEE Main paper 1 and 2.
If you are interested in B.Tech you have to appear for JEE Main paper 1 and if you are interested in B.Arch you have to appear for JEE Main paper 2.

There is no need to attend both the papers. It depends on the course you are applying. Paper 1 is for B.E/BTech and Paper 2 is for BArch/B.Planning. You can check the details of exam pattern on the link https://engineering.careers360.com/articles/jee-main-exam-pattern.
