Oxyntic/Parietal cells have the following functions:
1)It secretes Hydrochloric Acid (HCl), which sterilises the fooditems and activates the stomach's dormant proteolytic enzymes.
2)HCl converts the Ferric form of iron (+3) to the absorbable Ferrous form of iron (+2).
3)It secretes Castle Intrinsic Factor, which is essential for active Vitamin B12 absorption.
Pernicious anaemia is caused by destruction to the oxyntic cells of the stomach glands, which produce intrinsic factors that are required for vitamin B12 absorption. If these cells are damaged, vitamin B12 will not be absorbed by the body, resulting in B12 deficiency and pernicious anaemia.
