Let the number of females in the family as F.
So, the total number of people in the family is (6 + F).
The total monthly consumption of grain for the family is the average consumption per head multiplied by the total number of people = 14.4 × (6 + F)
The total monthly consumption of grain is also the sum of the consumption by the males and the females = 20 × 6 + 6 × F
According to the question,
14.4 × (6 + F) = 20 × 6 + 6 × F
⇒ 8.4F = 33.6
⇒ F = 4
Hence, the correct answer is 4.
