Correct Answer: 9.5
Solution :
Given, Vijay completes the work in 12 weeks, Praveen completes the work in 8 weeks.
They work on alternate weeks starting with Praveen.
Let the total work = LCM of 12 and 8 = 24 units
⇒ Efficiency of Vijay $= \frac{\text{Work}}{\text{Time}} = \frac{24}{12} = 2$
⇒ Efficiency of Praveen $= \frac{24}{8} = 3$
As they work on an alternate basis.
⇒ In 1 week work done = 3 units
⇒ In 2 weeks work done = 3 + 2 = 5 units
Similarly,
⇒ In 8 weeks work done = 20 units
⇒ 9 weeks work done = 20 + 3 = 23 units
The remaining work is done by Vijay.
⇒ Time taken to complete $= \frac{24-23}{2} = 0.5$ week
⇒ Total time taken to complete the work $= 9 + 0.5 = 9.5$ weeks
Hence, the correct answer is 9.5.
