Question : In a test (+5) marks are given for every correct answer and (−2) marks are given for every incorrect answer. Jay answered all the questions and scored (−12) marks, though he got 4 correct answers. How many of his answers were INCORRECT?
Option 1: 8
Option 2: 32
Option 3: 16
Option 4: 20
Correct Answer: 16
Solution :
Given: Marks for each correct answer = + 5
Attempted correct answer = 4
Marks for each wrong answer = – 2
Total marks scored = – 12
Let the total questions be $x$.
Correct = 4
Incorrect = $x - 4$
According to the question,
$4 \times 5 + (- 2)(x - 4) = - 12$
⇒ $2x - 8 = 32$
⇒ $x = 20$
$\therefore$ Total incorrect answer $= x - 4 = 20 - 4 = 16$
Hence, the correct answer is 16.
