Question : In an election, Ajay and Mohan are contesting for the Secretary post in a trade union of 9000 workers. 80% of the workers cast their votes, out of which 20% votes were found invalid. Ajay defeated Mohan by 1152 votes. How many votes did Ajay get?
Option 1: 3456
Option 2: 2304
Option 3: 4480
Option 4: 3546
Correct Answer: 3456
Solution :
Total number of workers = 9000
Number of workers who cast their votes = 80% of 9000
= 0.8 × 9000
= 7200
Number of invalid votes = 20% of 7200
Number of valid votes = 80% of 7200
= 0.8 × 7200
= 5760
Margin = 1152
Let $x$ be the votes Mohan got.
So, $x+(x+1152)=5760$
⇒ $2x=5760-1152$
⇒ $x = \frac{4608}{2} = 2304$
Votes Ajay got = 2304 + 1152 = 3456
Hence, the correct answer is 3456.
