is GATE exam conducted according to the subject for engineering or on the whole department of engineering
hi,
gate exam conducts for engineering stream and also some paper on basic science stream. student can attempt any of the paper irrespective of their stream. suppose you have studies computer science engineering in b.tech, but you want to apply in electronics in communication, then you can apply in gate for ece department.
now coming to gate syllabus, there is almost more over 40 papers in every engineering stream in 4 years of study. but for gate exam you dont need to study all the paper. including all the most basic conceptual and important paper, iits has prepared gate syllabus for every stream. GATE is conducted differently for different branches, however all the papers share the aptitude and english part. Other than that, the exam is oriented with the branch. For example the subjects for Computer Science will be Operating systems, Computer Organization and for Mechanical it will be Machine Design, Heat transfer etc.
Each of the branch's GATE has a defined syllabus of all the core subjects taught in your engineering.
