Is mechanism is necessary for every reaction

Ideally you should know the mechanism as it gives you an understanding of what occurs in a reaction and what are the intermediates that are formed. Otherwise, you will have to memorize every reaction w/o understanding the logic, which is detrimental.

Every reaction has its own reaction mechanism. So if you are studying physical chemistry, you should have a clear idea about the various reaction mechanisms, the reaction intermediates, and rate-determining step. Thus, it is essential that one should know the mechanisms required for every reaction.
