is the maths in engg. similar to that in 12th class.which one seems to be tougher

Yeah you can say till 1st year of Engineering because till this year class 12th maths and engineering mathematics are almost same but after 1st year it will change it's direction through topics like Fourier , Lagrange and other theorems. So it will be different from 2nd year.

Yes , in btech first year the 11th and 12th subjects are taught in advanced level and first year is same for every branch.
