Although it's not compulsory or necessary that you get yourself enrolled in a general course in any College while you plan to take a drop for the preparation of any entrance exam, but still, it's advisable to do so to save your year and to be safe with a second option if the first one fails.
Many students get themselves enrolled due to the same reason. You should always have a plan B ready in case of any unfortune.
But, yes! Its not necessary to do so.
