We don't know the exact number but I wrote the KVPY exam in 201314 for SA stream (i.e. class 11). The letter that I received from the KVPY office after qualifying for the second round of the exam(interview), mentioned that a total of about 1,05,000 took the written round of the exam for all the streams(SA + SB + SX). KVPY since then has grown in popularity and hence, I would expect the turnout this time to be within 1,20,000 and 1,50,000.
It might be 5-10 K more.
