My rank in PT (sports team) is 40. Will I get admission in nss college?
Being a recruited athlete is a tremendous edge but most are not in this situation. In California, and I am sure in many other places, the UC system looks at the “whole” person. So extracurriculars help for screening purposes. If all other things are equal, sports can give you an edge for admission if you are tied with others in your class rankings who have been doing nothing but studying. However, playing JV tennis for one year is not your ticket. The screeners want to see commitment to a team or program, not just resume padding. Off season training through club teams demonstrates your true efforts in addition to your three to four year of commitment at your school. Community service, leadership groups, school clubs, are equally beneficial to your chances. Just watch out that you don’t invent things and wind up getting audited on your application. My son’s friend got audited, he was super legit and deservedly got into Berkeley. His other friend got into Berkeley and had a way of embellishing his resume quite nicely with fabrications. Lucky for him he was not audited.
