On what does the placement for a job through iit depend on and what is the maximum package?

A good gpa along with a wide range of extra curricular activities will determine which company you get placed in and also the placement package that you receive.
Most companies have a GPA cut off to enter the second round which is the interview.
without a minimum gpa the candidate wont be considered
The highest package one has received is 1.39 Crore per annum from IIT Bombay.

The placement of a job depends on your final grade scored and how well you do in interview. If you answer most of technical questions and complete all rounds you will be given a offer letter to join the company. The maximum package is 50 lakhs - 1 crore.
