Procedure to get into navy as sailor and what are salary packages
How to become a sailor?
There are five different groups in the Indian Navy to which recruitment is done for the position
of sailor. These are:
1. Artificer Apprentice
An artificer apprentice will be working on steam-powered machinery, diesel and gas
turbines, guided missiles and other automatically controlled weapons, sensors avionic
equipment, computers and highly advanced radio and electrical power systems.
Candidates who have qualified in 10+2 examination with 60% marks in math and physics
along with either chemistry, biology or computer science will also be eligible. Their age
should be between 17 and 20 years on the day enrollment day.
2. Senior Secondary Recruits (SSR)
They are required to serve in powerful, modern ships such as aircraft carriers, guided
missile destroyers and frigates, replenishment ships, submarines and aircraft. They will
also work on equipment such as sonars, firing of weapons, missiles or rockets.
Should have graduated 10+2 with math and physics as majors along with either
chemistry, biology or computer science. The age limitation is the same as AA.
3. Matric Recruit (MR)
There are three types of matric recruits, chef, steward and sanitary hygienist.
The chef prepares the food as per the menu including vegetarian and non-
vegetarian dishes.
The steward serves food, housekeeping, etc. Hygienist maintains hygiene along
with handling small odd jobs. Should have passed in class 10 from a recognized
school. Age limitation is the same as before.
4. Matric Recruit (Musician)
They play musical instruments as a part of the naval band during ceremonies and other
functions.
They have to be qualified in 10 th along with proficiency in western notation, aural
aptitude and basic knowledge in theory of music. Practical skills on any western classical
or wind/percussion instrument will also require. The age should be between 17 and 25
on the day of enrolment.
5. Sports
They will involve as physical training officers at various departments other than looking
after the facets of sports management. Regular postgraduate degree or BE/BTech in any
field is required. However, preference will be given to the candidates who have diploma
in sports coaching from National Institute of Sports and MSc in sports.
Salary
Initially the approximate salary for Sailor is Rs.3,200 per month. After initial training depending on Rank
and number of years of service the pay will be about Rs.4,330 to Rs.16,395 per month. They are also
entitled to free ration, accommodation and medical treatment for themselves and dependents. They are
also provided with a life insurance cover of Rs. 3,50,000 on a nominal premium of Rs.250 p.m.
Promotions exist up to the rank of Master Chief Petty officer which is equivalent to Subedar Major of
Indian Army.

Education & Training for a Navy Sailor
To become a Navy sailor you usually have to complete Year 10 or equivalent with passes in English, mathematics and sometimes science. You will also need to successfully complete a series of aptitude tests, medical assessments and selection interviews.
Following selection and employment in the Navy as a sailor, you will need to undertake basic training. This involves an 11-week recruit course at the Navy Recruit Training School located at HMAS Cerberus on Western Port Bay in Victoria, followed by specialist training.
As different specialisations have different entry requirements, you should contact your nearest Defence Force Recruiting Centre for specific requirements.
