To answer your question, yes this is indeed a type of drop albeit with one more chance to get in IIT courses without any JEE Advance. After one year, there is an internal exam which has to be compulsorily passed in order to get a seat in JEE Advance. And to further inform you, no they won't be studying with regular students as they are being "prepared" for IIT and have to start from 1st year once they pass the internal exam.

Also, be advised before taking the preparatory course that the exam is a subjective one and is pretty much on the level of JEE Advance. Nevertheless, you can still give JEE Advance again. I hope I clear all your doubts. Feel free to comment down.
