Dr. Rajendra Prasad (INC) was elected as the president of the constituent assembly. Its vice-president was Harendra Coomar Mookerjee. The Constituent Assembly of India was elected to write the Constitution of India. Following India's independence from British Government in 1947, its members served as the nation's first Parliament. A large part of the Constituent Assembly was drawn from the Congress Party .
